Our Saskatoon berry patch was established in 1993 with the planting of two hundred plus saskatoon seedlings with more added in 1994. Production started in 1998 with a small, but delicious crop of large juicy berries. Although we would like to be totally organic, we have to spray twice in the spring to assure a crop. We do not spray after the fruit is set.
We have three varieties in our patch. The Smoky and Northline are the most prolific and the Theissens have the largest berries. They are all very tasty. The season usually lasts for between three and four weeks starting mid July depending on the season. Some years we have been picking in early July.
This year we are expanding our available fruit to include raspberries, apples, rhubarb and we will be planting some strawberries but don't expect a huge crop for the first year.
Come on out for a visit. We always enjoy the company. Pick a pail or two or just share a coffee and some quality time with us. Everyone is welcome.
